CELEBRATING 45 YEARS
The Burns Visual Arts Society of Calgary (BVAS) was formed when dozens of independent artists who rented studio space in the historic Burns Building were evicted to make way for the construction of the Calgary Performing Arts Centre.
Under our mandate, BVAS provides affordable studio space for working artists. Since its establishment in 1979, over 200 artists have maintained studios within the society. This includes artists of all backgrounds and differing areas of expertise.
BVAS is Canada’s oldest continual artist studio cooperative. Its existence has supported the creation of an astonishing body of artistic work and illuminated thousands of lives through a multitude of connections between artists, students, and the public.
